Like its companion chair, the Auburn Stool is named for the Maine location of the Thos. Moser workshop, and was inspired by a simple cafeteria chair made of steel and plastic that Tom and Mary spotted on a ferry from Maine to Nova Scotia. Crafted in hand-finished North American cherry or walnut, the stool forms a simple, minimalist profile that follows its occupant’s natural contours and offers a beautiful contrast to more traditional forms.

The Auburn Stool’s curved back supports the lumbar in two directions at once, a geometric detail called an anticlastic curve – like a potato chip. “Whether from my sense of responsibility, my curiosity or perhaps closer to the truth, from my creative stubbornness in my 81st year, I find myself still drawn to the workbench,” says Tom Moser, the latest result being the Auburn Stool.
Appropriate for a variety of environments, the Auburn Stool can be made in two standard sizes to match traditional counter heights. For interiors with different counter heights, the Moser team can customize the stool to fit.
Like all our pieces, each Auburn Stool will be handmade at our workshop in its namesake town of Auburn, Maine, and signed by the craftsperson who made the piece as a seal of quality.
