Thos. Moser

A serving piece made to furniture standards.

The Serving Board brings the material, joinery, and discipline of Thos. Moser furniture to a smaller object.

The board is cut from a single piece of premium cherry. There are no glue joints across its surface. At one end, a solid walnut handle is fitted by hand with a dovetail joint.

Its scale may be different from our furniture, but the standards are the same.

One Piece of Cherry

Each board begins with a full-width piece of 5/4" cherry, selected individually for grain, color, and character.

Keeping the board in one piece allows the grain to remain uninterrupted from edge to edge. The material is then carefully milled to create a surface substantial enough to remain stable over time while still comfortable to carry and use.

No two boards will be exactly alike.

The Dovetail

The walnut handle is joined to the board with a dovetail cut and fitted by hand.

For generations, the dovetail has been used in fine case furniture because of its strength and precision. In the Serving Board, the joint is not concealed. It is enlarged, placed in full view, and made central to the form.

Structure and ornament become one in the same.

Designed by Brenda Swett

Brenda Swett has been a Thos. Moser cabinetmaker since 1987.

Brenda works in our case department, making large furniture pieces such as the Dr. White’s Chest, where precisely fitted dovetails are fundamental to the construction of each drawer.

When our makers were invited to propose a design for a serving board, Brenda looked to the language of that work. She enlarged the dovetail she has made throughout her career and made it the defining element of the piece.
