L.L.Bean Flagship Store

L.L.Bean Flagship Store

FREEPORT, MAINE

When L.L.Bean unveiled its newly reimagined flagship in Freeport, Maine, it created more than a place to shop. Designed as a destination for discovery, the 150,000-square-foot store invites visitors to experience the outdoors, learn something new, and spend time together. From native Maine trout and fly-fishing demonstrations to interactive exhibits throughout the space, every detail is designed to make a visit memorable.

Thos. Moser furniture plays a quieter but equally purposeful role in that experience.

Working with the L.L.Bean team over two phases of the flagship’s transformation, we created solid wood tables and benches designed for the demands of a busy retail environment while reflecting the character and longevity at the heart of both Maine brands. The furniture was conceived not simply to furnish the store, but to become part of its experience: places to gather, work, pause, and engage.

The first installation centered around the store’s monogramming area, where a substantial hard maple monogram work table and three benches provide a welcoming place for customers to explore personalization and watch products come to life. The work table was designed at two heights, accommodating both standing and seated use while creating an accessible, lower surface for younger visitors. Delivered in two pieces and assembled on site, the substantial table was built to withstand heavy daily use while letting the maple's natural character develop over time.

As the flagship evolved, so did the furniture. A second phase introduced two custom tables and an additional 23 benches throughout the store. The tables were designed to complement the original monogramming table without replicating it, with a substantial scale, counter-height work surface, integrated lip, and modesty panel tailored to the space's architecture. The benches extend that visual language throughout the store, including custom glides for stability on tile floors and six benches with simple slatted backs designed to protect the murals behind them without visually closing off the space.

Together, the pieces bring a sense of permanence to an environment created around exploration and activity. Like L.L.Bean itself, Thos. Moser furniture is made to be used, lived with, returned to for years, and designed around the idea that the best experiences are the ones people remember.
