Like much of what we do, the Sequel Chair finds its inspiration in what came before. In most cases, the antecedent is associated with a particular place or movement. In this instance, designer David Moser’s inspiration was closer to home. The Sequel is in many ways an Asian-influenced derivative of Tom Moser’s Continuous Arm Chair. At first glance, the influence is clear: the Sequel Chair’s lines are decidedly familiar. But on closer inspection, the carved continuous arm of the Sequel Chair seems almost to float and leaves as much space as substance.
As the only American makers showing at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair in the mid-1980s, Tom and Mary witnessed something they already knew to be true: that the best design is often incremental, building over time on work from the past. Years later, David himself confirmed, “Though we are innovators, the Moser aesthetic is iterative and almost always evolutionary, owing deference to antecedent form.” That iteration then was the challenge, and Sequel is the result.
Crafted from sustainably harvested cherry, walnut, or other American hardwoods, the Sequel Chair’s effortless appearance conceals the challenge of its construction. Crafted with both bending and hand carving, the chair’s continuous arm and legs require an expert knowledge of wood and an unyielding eye for precision.
The Sequel Chair reflects what we strive for in our designs, where nothing should be added and nothing taken away. Designed for dining settings, the chair’s light footprint makes it ideal for most any room. And like all Thos. Moser furniture, the Sequel Chair is made to last, with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery finished to perfection for a lifetime of regular use.
