Description

This chair represents Thos. Moser’s commitment to find and partner like-minded designer/makers to further explore through a contemporary lens what is possible within the parameters of the brand, and modern craft itself. The result embodies all things Moser; a dedication to functionally driven objects, formal simplicity, the characteristic elimination of ornament, use and celebration of traditional materials and woodworking techniques -all with an emphasis on craftsmanship. These characteristics are not only compatible, but exemplary of what the Moser brand has come to stand for, and this chair is yet another iteration of Moser quality.

The Portland Chair consists of four turned and tapered legs. The legs are turned a second time after becoming tapered, this time ‘off-center’ which accounts for the subtle taper at the bottom of the front legs and at both the bottom and top of the rear legs. The rails are cross-lapped beneath the subtly carved seat and their tenons go through the front and rear legs where they are wedged for both strength and visible interest. The top of the legs also come through the steam-bent crest rail and are too finished with a visible wedged tenon.

The Portland Chair is a dining chair, and can be made in most American hardwoods. Its relatively small footprint may make it attractive for smaller spaces without compromising comfort, aesthetics or quality.
