The Cumberland Chair embodies our enduring commitment to simplicity. Though inspired by Danish Modern forms, the Cumberland Dining Chair has its own perspective and is a uniquely artistic interpretation of its historical antecedents.
NEW! Now Available with Rush Seat
A rush seat is a woven seat made of fiber rush, which can be made from various materials, in this case twisted paper. As a form of seating that has been around for hundreds of years, rush seats are comfortable and surprisingly durable. The rush is woven around a wooden frame to create a strong, lightweight seat. The seating surface is slightly flexible and gives a little when someone sits on it rather than being rigid and hard. Several different types of fibers can be used to make a rush seat; some examples include cattails, bull rushes, seagrass, and paper fiber rush as employed here. The strands are joined to add strength to form narrow rope-like lengths which are woven in a closely spaced manner around the seat frame.
Rush seats usually have an average lifespan of about 20 to 30 years, however they are covered under our standard lifetime guarantee
so you can order with confidence. The color of the seat is natural and some slight variation is possible. The seat is treated with shellac for longevity.
We are partnering with a local Maine artisan Bernard Zike to weave the seats. CLICK HERE

Perhaps not apparent at first glance are the nuanced relationships of the parts that inform the overall proportion of this chair. Typical of Moser furniture, we've tried to simplify each piece, stripping it to its required elements alone. The opportunity for elevating the modest furniture forms comes through the attention to the relationship of one of these spared parts to another.
The rails that span the legs and support the saddled solid wood seat employ an innovative double-housed mortise and tenon joint - allowing us to achieve the desired simplicity without compromising strength.
Atop the turned tapered legs sits the continuous arm and crest rail. This element is the sum of three pieces, a single solid wood steam bending at the back, joined with the collections hallmark visible finger joint to the arms.
Due to the well-considered geometry of the seat and the relationship to the continuous arm + crest rail, the saddled solid wood seat provides comfort without relying on the use of an upholstered foam seat. We've enabled ourselves to decrease the thickness of the seat which creates a visual lightness which furthers the simplicity that is characteristic of this collection. Like any Moser furniture, this piece is guaranteed for life. We are confident that our innovative joinery has only raised the bar for Moser quality.
