CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF HANDCRAFTED AMERICAN FURNITURE

Since getting its start in 1972 in New Gloucester, Maine, Thos. Moser has earned an international reputation for its award-winning designs, and has become recognized as one of the world’s foremost designers and builders of solid wood furniture. The company has grown from a one-man operation to nearly 60 cabinetmakers at its Auburn, Maine shop, while remaining true to its original mission: to restore the lost art of fine woodworking by building furniture that celebrates the natural beauty of wood; is of simple, unadorned, graceful lines; and is crafted for a long, useful life.
OUR HISTORY

Formerly a Bates college professor, Tom Moser left teaching in 1972 to start making one-of-a-kind furniture in an old Grange Hall in New Gloucester, Maine. His wife Mary managed the selling and finances, while their four sons trained as young apprentices. Since then, the company has grown from a one-man operation to nearly 60 cabinetmakers. Tom Moser continues to conceive and design new products in collaboration with his youngest son, David. Andy is an accomplished craftsman and works in the shop, while Aaron directs MoserContract initiatives. The company has produced approximately 150,000 pieces of furniture since its founding and shipped to at least 25 countries.

“It is significant to me that we are celebrating this milestone anniversary,” said Tom Moser. “We started the business as a labor of love and as we grew knew that we were making a difference. We have come a long way since those lean early years, and for that we are grateful to our loyal customers and to the all the men and women who have been part of our shop family.”

Throughout the evolution of the company and its wide variety of product introductions, the Moser aesthetic has remained a constant: “It is through simplicity of form and attention to detail and proportion that we achieve a well-designed piece, and a piece from which nothing can be taken and to which nothing can be added. Forty years have passed and our commitment to the craft and to our customers remains the same.”
