ABOUT THE PASADENA ROCKER

No where is the idea of history as prologue more applicable than in furniture design, and both Tom and David Moser are adroit students of design and antecedent form. Approaching design with a sculptor’s eye, David’s passion is stirred by contemporary sources of objective beauty. Such was the case with the Pasadena Rocker, itself the progeny of a long line of high craft design-builders such as Sam Maloof, Art Carpenter, Wharton Esherick and New Zealand furniture designer David Haig.

The Pasadena Rocker was awarded Interior Design magazine's 2009 BEST OF YEAR award in the residential seating category. CLICK HERE for details.

When David Moser began exploring the nuances of his own rocker form, he was particularly moved by Haig’s design accomplishment, exemplifying sublime form and sheer simplicity. And so in consummate Moser fashion we again challenged ourselves to coax movement and fluidity from solid wood. David’s intent was to build a quintessentially functional Moser piece in the “studio” genre; rollover edges and flowing joints. The result is a stand-alone sculptural piece, satisfying the visual senses while offering comfort and long service.

A CABINETMAKER'S PERSEPCTIVE
The Pasadena Rocker was introduced just last year to award-winning acclaim, and has already become a favorite among our customers. Cabinetmaker Mike Craig (seen here working on a Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair) has worked in our shop for more than a decade - a full 12 years as of this past August! The Pasadena Rocker is one of Mike’s favorite pieces to build, mostly because of the sheer complexity of its construction (there isn’t a single straight line on this piece) but also in part because of the beauty of the piece itself.

In the following video clip, Mike is working on assembling the legs of a Pasadena Rocker to the seat, and then fitting the top crest rail into the back. This involves drilling out the holes for the pins that will hold the connecting joint together, and then fitting each individual leg. A woodworkers glue is also applied inside the joint to ensure that it will stay tight for decades to come...
