For those who have wished for the pleasures of a recliner but winced at their appearances, the
Lolling Chair & Ottoman
provide an ideal solution. Shaped to support the curvature of your back, the tufted leather-covered padding strikes just the right balance between firm support and supple cushioning. A simple shift of the five-position back transforms the angle from upright to reclined. The removable headrest is also adjustable. Curved armrests with our hand-rubbed finish provide tactile richness.
The design of this piece owes its form to a porch chair built by Heywood Wakefield shortly after WWII. Made of yellow birch and stained a honey maple, with all rounded corners and awning-like canvas cushions, Wakefield’s chair has found its way to countless porches and sunrooms. Our Lolling Chair serves the eye and the body at rest in the living room, in the den, at home, or in the office.
A CABINETMAKER'S PERSPECTIVE
The Lolling Chair has been a long time favorite of our customers and one of our best sellers for many years. Cabinetmaker Bob Cabral (holding a freshly-cut Lolling Chair arm) joined our team in 2003. Bob's furniture making talents are wide-ranging, but the Lolling Chair remains one of his favorite pieces to build and he has built a countless number of them for customers all over the world (if you already have yours, take a peek underneath and you just might find his signature).
In the following video clip, Bob is working on assembling the arms of a Lolling Chair and wedging the arms and legs to the base. He will eventually trim off the exposed top of the wedges and sand them so smooth that a rub of the hand will not distinguish between the wedged-tenon joint that holds the arm in place and the surface of the arm itself...
