Originally launched in Fall 2015 as a single armchair with a cotton shaker tape seat, Hancock has been revisited and now includes a side chair with the option of a vegetable-tanned leather strap seat.

Reference to traditional furniture form has long been a practice of Thos. Moser. Here, the vehicle is the ladder back, a form made popular by, and typically associated with, the Shakers of the 18th and 19th centuries. So named after the Hancock Shaker Village, the chair offers a contemporary take on a historic furniture form.

Just as the Shakers embraced technology, here we employ the most advanced technology available in woodworking through the use of a 5-axis CNC. This machine combined with many standard woodworking machines, and a significant amount of hand work via traditional woodworking skills, add up to being what I refer to as ‘appropriate craftsmanship’. That is, employing craft as appropriate, whether a high-tech machine such as the CNC or low tech tool such as a hand plane, to achieve the desired outcome. Ultimately, the commitment is to the object itself, and the quality thereof, regardless of its making process.

The webbed seat provides enough flex to achieve a comfort otherwise impossible with a solid wood seat, while remaining durable over the life of the chair itself.

Available with a shaker tape (cotton strap) seat or a saddle leather seat. The leather strap seat is vegetable-tanned leather; approx. 3/16" thick. The leather used is vegetable-tanned and does not have harmful chemicals. It is an old-world, artisanal process that takes advantage of the tannic acids naturally found in some plant species, by using the barks, branches, leaves and even some fruits in some specific techniques.

Appropriate for a variety of environments, the Hancock chair is as much a guest chair as a dining chair and can be used as a user seems fit. Available as a side chair or arm chair.

The Hancock Chair can be crafted from most solid American Hardwoods. Please inquire for requests other than walnut and cherry.

Each chair will be handmade, and a skilled craftsman in the workshop in Maine will assemble the piece, signing every chair as a seal of quality.

The Hancock Chair has been honored with a 2016 GOOD DESIGN Award, as awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. CLICK HERE for details on this exciting news.
